TIF calls for regulatory certainty for the telecoms sector
· Clear, consistent approach to regulation needed
· Fair, cost-based fee structure needed for road opening and reinstatement
· Major effort by industry underway to ensure full compliance with General Data Protection Regulation
· Richard Moat, CEO of eir Group, announced as Chair of TIF for 2018
The incoming Chair of Telecommunications and Internet Federation (TIF),the Ibec group that represents the sector, Richard Moat, today addressed the Annual Digital Lunch in the Intercontinental Hotel Dublin, and called for regulatory certainty for the telecoms sector which has invested €2.75 billion in the network over the past 5 years.
Mr. Moat said: “We believe that a clear, consistent and pro-investment regulatory environment is essential to the future of the industry and we will be looking to ComReg to facilitate this in future years.”
He praised the work of the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten T.D. on the National Broadband Plan and on the Broadband and Mobile Phone Taskforce.
“There is a real commitment by Minister Denis Naughten and Minister Seán Kyne to remove administrative, cost and planning barriers to the rollout of high speed broadband and improved mobile coverage. These obstacles can be reduced through a cooperative approach. Such an approach is required to achieve a fair, cost-based fee structure with the City and County Management Association for road opening and reinstatement.
“The telecoms sector takes its obligations to protect its customers’ data very seriously. A major effort is underway across industry to ensure full compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation which becomes law next May” he concluded.
