Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, welcomes the announcement of further significant investment in the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre Programme.
Danny McCoy, CEO of Ibec stated: "The existing and new centres of excellence are key to delivering and developing research, talent and capabilities in areas of strategic importance to Irish businesses, including in ICT, manufacturing, biotechnology and agri-food. A strong research and development pipeline is critical for businesses to innovate and compete on a global scale and collaboration between the private sector, universities and Institutes of Technology is essential to this process.
"For Ireland to continue its success in attracting FDI, and to realise its ambition to become a global innovation leader, we call on the Government to invest further in research and development, and to support the commercialisation of this output.
"Given the importance of the manufacturing sector to Ireland's economy, strategic investment in an advanced manufacturing development centre is now required. We look forward to working with SFI and the Government to support this process."
