Ibec’s vision for a globally competitive digital economy that delivers jobs, growth, and prosperity in Ireland will be explored in greater detail at a seminar in The Marker Hotel, Dublin on Wednesday, 26 April.
'Delivering the Digital Age' is a free event, partnered by Electric Ireland, aimed at business leaders in the Dublin area, to increase their understanding of digital advancements and to assist companies’ preparations for compliance with upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), which come into effect in May 2018. The seminar aims to empower employers and employees alike to promote better use of digital innovation in their products and services and will see talks given from a range of industry leaders as well as from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
Speaking ahead of the seminar, Ibec’s head of Digital Economy Policy, Erik O’Donovan, stated: “The use of digital tools and data across our economy deserves particular attention from Irish businesses and policy makers. At 6%, our digital related GDP is higher than the EU average of 5.7%, and the G20, at an average of 5.3%. In addition, the economic impact of digital uptake is greater in Ireland than elsewhere; 12% higher than an average of high income OECD and non-OECD economies. However, we cannot take this potential for granted, especially in the face of Brexit and intense global competition, Ireland must increase both the ambition and pace of its digital development.”
“Creating an environment that enables continued investment in digital infrastructure, skills and innovation in Ireland will enable job creation, growth, and improvements to our public services. In this context, Ibec is launching a regional campaign across the country that underlines the urgency of building on the telecom industry's annual network investment of €500m in high speed broadband deployment to Irish businesses; showcases examples of digital innovation across our economy; and assists businesses to innovate with data securely.”
“The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) will come into effect in May 2018 and businesses need to act now to ensure they stay compliant. During the free Ibec seminar on Wednesday, 26th April, industry leading experts will explain in detail how these regulatory changes impact your business and what you need to do before the new laws are in place. The event provides an opportunity for companies across the region to meet with their peers, create business collaborations, and gain insights in to how secure innovation with digital tools and data can lead to business success.”
